Humanitarian practitioners discussing in a group during a PHAP course

Fall/winter 2019 courses and workshops on humanitarian law and policy

Join us in Entebbe, Geneva, Amman/Dead Sea, Abuja, and Bangkok.

PHAP will be organizing the next courses in its track on humanitarian law and policy in Entebbe, Geneva, Amman/Dead Sea, Abuja, and Bangkok. In each location, we are offering a three-day Core Professional Training on Humanitarian Law and Policy followed by two-day Thematic Workshops

The Core Professional Training on Humanitarian Law and Policy is an intensive three-day course that serves as an opportunity for mid- and senior-level practitioners and policy professionals to explore international humanitarian law (IHL) challenges relevant to their work. Although previous exposure to the relevant issues is an essential prerequisite, the course is designed to accommodate participants both with and without formal legal training. The Core Training will be held on 16-18 September in Entebbe, 7-9 October in Geneva, 10-12 November at the Dead Sea, 2-4 December in Abuja, and 20-22 January in Bangkok.

Each Thematic Workshop focuses in depth on a different issue of concern to humanitarian actors, building on the shared understanding of international humanitarian law (IHL) developed in the Core Training and bringing in additional relevant legal, policy, and practical considerations. Alumni of previous courses are also encouraged to apply and benefit from the Returning Participant Discount program. Upcoming workshops will be on the topics of peacekeeping forces and protection of civilians (Entebbe, 19-20 September), engaging non-State armed groups for humanitarian protection (Geneva, 10-11 October, and Bangkok, 23-24 January), engagement with military actors (Amman/Dead Sea, 13-14 November), and the law of non-international armed conflict (Abuja, 5-6 December).
